Studying mandarin Chinese Taiwan

Visa overview

For foreign nationals who wish to study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan on a long-term basis (more than 6 months). Applicants must first enter Taiwan on a Visitor Visa for the purpose of studying Chinese, complete at least 4 months of study, then apply to convert to a Resident Visa. Cannot be applied for by those who entered Taiwan without a visa, on a landing visa, or on a Visitor Visa for any purpose other than studying Chinese. Applicants who entered on a studying-Chinese Visitor Visa may apply directly to the NIA after 4 months of study.

Documents

Mandatory

The essential minimum documents required for a visa application, such as a passport or visa application form. These are necessary regardless of the location, method, or conditions of the application.

  • Passport

    Must be valid at least six months from planned arrival date in Taiwan.

  • Arrival card

    The migration card is issued on the airplane or filled out online.

  • Photo

    Two colour passport-size photographs with white background, taken within the last six months. Size: 2 inches (5×5 cm).

  • Visa application form

    Completed online, printed and signed by the applicant. The printed form must display a barcode.

Supporting

Documents that specify, substantiate, and confirm the purpose of the visit, as well as provide necessary information about the applicant and their future activities in the country.

  • Proof of financial mean

    Evidence of financial resources to meet the expenses for the stay in Taiwan.

  • Proof of enrolment at accredited language centre

    Enrolment certificate from a recognised Mandarin Chinese language centre or university language division in Taiwan, stating programme dates and weekly study hours.

  • Class attendance record (at least 4 months of completed study)

    Official class attendance record issued by the language institution, confirming that the applicant has completed at least 4 months of Mandarin Chinese study on a Visitor Visa. Required for in-Taiwan conversion to Resident Visa.

  • Registration for a further 3+ months of study

    Proof of registration / enrolment for a continuing Mandarin Chinese programme of at least 3 months, confirming the intention to continue long-term study.

  • Proof of original entry on studying-Chinese visitor Visa

    Copy of the current Visitor Visa annotated with the purpose of studying Chinese, and the immigration entry stamp. Required for in-Taiwan conversion applications.

Documents required vary depending on individual circumstances, specific visa conditions, the place, and the method of application.

  • Travel medical insurance

    To cover any unforeseen medical treatment might need in Taiwan.

  • Documents for minor children

    Birth certificate, adoption certificate, or guardianship certificate evidencing parental or guardianship rights. Certified power of attorney or written permission from parents or legal guardians for minors travelling abroad.

*Foreign official documents must be apostilled and legalized in accordance with the regulations of the country whose consular or diplomatic mission they are being submitted to. Additionally, they must be accompanied by a certified translation into the official language of that country or into English, unless otherwise specified by the mission's requirements.

**Prior to submitting the documents, it is strongly advised to verify the specific procedures and requirements with the relevant mission.

Requirements

  • Not have been previously deported from Taiwan.

  • Never work in Taiwan as a migrant worker.
