Visa overview

Applicants with a residence permit for studies in an EU or multilateral program in another EU country must notify the Swedish Migration Agency if they are required to complete part of their studies in Sweden. In other cases of mobility, a separate residence permit for higher education in Sweden must be applied for.

Validity period
The period during which the visa remains valid and can be used for entry into the country. The validity period or expiration date is indicated directly on the visa itself.
The temporary residence permit allows entry and stay in Sweden for more than 1 year. The Swedish Migration Agency decides the length of stay based on evidence provided. Citizens of countries that require an entry visa must collect a temporary residence permit card at the embassy and travel with it and a passport; visa-free nationals can enter with a passport and decision copy, but obliged to visit the Swedish Migration Agency upon arrival.

Length of stay
The maximum duration for which one is permitted to stay in the country continuously from the date of entry.
Is granted for a maximum of 360 days.

Extension of stay
The extension of the maximum duration of stay in the country initially permitted by the visa, subject to approval by the immigration authorities. This is typically processed within the country without the need for departure.
Mobility notification is a one time action and does not require extension.

The ability to enter and exit the country an unlimited number of times, unless otherwise specified, within the visa's validity period.
Number of entries
A parameter specifying the number of times the visa holder can enter the country during its validity period. Visas can be single-entry, multiple-entry, or with a specified number of entries.

The period during which the immigration authorities review the application and make a decision regarding the issuance of the visa. Only business days are counted, excluding weekends and public holidays.
The waiting time is approximate and is based on the time frame for reviewing similar applications over the past 12 months.The length of the review is affected by both the workload of the migration service and the need for additional verification of documents or an incomplete package of documents provided by the applicant.

A fee levied for the processing and evaluation of an application. This charge is non-refundable under any circumstances. In certain instances, the payment of supplementary fees may be required.
Mobility notification is free of fees.

Health insurance
Certificate of insurance through a university. If it is clear from the admission decision that the applicant will be covered by health insurance from the university or university college, an admission letter as proof of health insurance can be submitted instead.
Proof of financial means
Different certificates depending on how the applicant will be supporting themselves financially such as bank statement, scholarship, sponsorship letter, salary proof, educational grant certificate. In 2025 at least SEK 10,584 per month.

Current immigration or residence status
National passport or ID card; residence permit or other document confirming the right to legally reside in the country of residence, if it differs from the one stated in the applicant's passport.
Documents for minor children
Birth certificate, adoption certificate, or guardianship certificate evidencing parental or guardianship rights; certified power of attorney or permission from parents or legal guardians for minors traveling abroad.
Power of attorney
A representative can apply, if the applicant grants them power of attorney. In that case, the person who applies must attach a copy of the power of attorney to the application.
*Foreign official documents must be apostilled and legalized in accordance with the regulations of the country whose consular or diplomatic mission they are being submitted to. Additionally, they must be accompanied by a certified translation into the official language of that country or into English, unless otherwise specified by the mission's requirements.
