Visa overview

Allows visitors to enter the Republic of South Africa for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days. Travellers are required to have sufficient funds, and a return or onward ticket.

The primary characteristics that define the conditions for obtaining and using a visa. These conditions may vary depending on the individual circumstances of the applicant and the decision of the immigration authorities of the country.

    Visa validity period

    The period during which the visa remains valid and can be used for entry into the country. The validity period or expiration date is indicated directly on the visa itself.

    The eVisa is issued for a maximum period of 90 days.

    The visa is issued for visits not exceeding 90 days, with the permitted duration of stay to be determined by the immigration officer at the point of entry, which may be shorter than the visa’s validity period.

    The extension of the maximum duration of stay in the country initially permitted by the visa, subject to approval by the immigration authorities. This is typically processed within the country without the need for departure.

    The eVisa cannot be extended. Applicants wishing to remain in South Africa beyond the authorized period must exit the country and submit a new visa application.

    The cost of the eVisa depends on the applicant’s nationality and the stated purpose of travel. Citizens of certain countries may be exempt from the visa fees. Upon completion of the online application form, the eVisa portal automatically calculates the applicable fee and provides payment instructions to the applicant.

Documents

Mandatory

The essential minimum documents required for a visa application, such as a passport or visa application form. These are necessary regardless of the location, method, or conditions of the application.

  • Proof of financial mean

    Recent certified bank statement for the last 3 months or any other proof of income (travellers' cheques, cash). This document must demonstrate sufficient funds to support oneself for the entire stay and for return expenses. In cases of sponsorship by a host, an invitation letter with financial commitments and proof of the sponsor's income must also be provided.

  • Return ticket

    A valid return or onward ticket or proof of reservation thereof. Must be issued by airline or travel company and must contain the applicant's name, flight number and date.

  • Passport

    Or an equivalent travel document, with a validity period exceeding the duration of stay by at least 30 days and with at least 2 blank pages (copies). Photocopies of pages bearing previous or current visas, as well as copies of all temporary residence permits, must also be submitted.

  • Visa application form

    An online eVisa application form, duly completed and submitted with all the necessary documentation.

  • Visa fee payment

    Applicants are required to pay the visa fee upon filling out the visa application form.

  • Proof of purpose

    A statement or documentation detailing the purpose and duration of the visit.

Documents that specify, substantiate, and confirm the purpose of the visit, as well as provide necessary information about the applicant and their future activities in the country.

  • Invitation letter

    If applicable. A letter from the organization hosting the activity or event must confirm the applicant’s participation, state that the activity or event is conducted under the organization’s authority, and indicate whether the applicant will receive any remuneration. If remuneration is provided, the exact amount must be specified.

Documents required vary depending on individual circumstances, specific visa conditions, the place, and the method of application.

  • Proof of accommodation

    A confirmed hotel reservation, rental contract, or an invitation letter from the host, including a formal commitment to accommodate the visitor for the specified duration of their stay.

  • Yellow fever certificate

    A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for individuals travelling from or transiting through yellow fever endemic regions of Africa or South America. This requirement does not apply to persons who remain in direct transit through such areas without stopover.

  • Medical insurance

    Valid for the full duration of stay in South Africa, covering at least $100,000 and include emergency medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation, including in case of death.

*Foreign official documents must be apostilled and legalized in accordance with the regulations of the country whose consular or diplomatic mission they are being submitted to. Additionally, they must be accompanied by a certified translation into the official language of that country or into English, unless otherwise specified by the mission's requirements.

Requirements
