Electronic travel authorisation (NZeTA) New Zealand

New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority, NZeTA, Visa waiver, Visa Waiver Visitor Visa, eTA

Visa overview

Description of the visa, its purpose, conditions, peculiarities of issuance, and guidelines for utilization.

Foreign nationals travelling from Australia who hold an eligible, valid Australian visa at the time they check in for their flight to New Zealand are exempt from visa requirements until November 2, 2026. They may enter New Zealand without a visa for tourism, family visits, short-term study (up to 3 months), or business purposes for up to 90 days. Before traveling, these visitors must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA). Upon arrival, they are granted a Visa Waiver Visitor Visa under the visa waiver scheme. Travelers are required to have sufficient funds, confirm accommodation arrangements, and possess a return or onward ticket. Employment within New Zealand during the stay is not permitted. However, visitors are allowed to work remotely for an overseas business or client.

Eligible individuals

The main categories of individuals for whom the visa is intended and who it is best suited for.

Tourist, businessman, visitor, visa exempt

Time frames and cost

The primary characteristics that define the conditions for obtaining and using a visa. These conditions may vary depending on the individual circumstances of the applicant and the decision of the immigration authorities of the country.

  • 2 years

    Visa validity period

The period during which the visa remains valid and can be used for entry into the country. The validity period or expiration date is indicated directly on the visa itself.

The NZeTA is valid for two years from its date of issue. Please note that its use under the current visa-waiver program for eligible foreign nationals is part of a 12-month trial period.

  • 3 months

    Duration of stay

The maximum duration for which one is permitted to stay in the country continuously from the date of entry.

The NZeTA permits a maximum stay of 90 days per visit, and the total time spent in New Zealand under this authority must not exceed 6 months within any 12-month period.

  • Not applicable

    Extension of stay

The extension of the maximum duration of stay in the country initially permitted by the visa, subject to approval by the immigration authorities. This is typically processed within the country without the need for departure.

    The NZeTA cannot be extended.

  • multiple-entry

The ability to enter and exit the country an unlimited number of times, unless otherwise specified, within the visa's validity period.

    Number of entries

A parameter specifying the number of times the visa holder can enter the country during its validity period. Visas can be single-entry, multiple-entry, or with a specified number of entries.

The NZeTA is issued for multiple entries.

  • 3 days

    Processing time

The period during which the immigration authorities review the application and make a decision regarding the issuance of the visa. Only business days are counted, excluding weekends and public holidays.

The standard processing time for an NZeTA is up to 72 hours, although many applications are approved faster.

  • $17 (~$10) - NZeTA requests via mobile app

$23 (~$14) - NZeTA requests via the website registration form

$100 (~$59) - International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL)

    Consular fee

A fee levied for the processing and evaluation of an application. This charge is non-refundable under any circumstances. In certain instances, the payment of supplementary fees may be required.

Applicants must pay two fees when applying for an NZeTA: a processing fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). The NZeTA fee is NZD $17 via the mobile app or NZD $23 online. The IVL is a fixed fee of NZD $100 that supports New Zealand's tourism infrastructure and natural environment. Both fees are paid together upon submission.

Documents

A list of documents required for visa application. The exact list depends on the chosen visa type, the purpose of the visit, and the individual conditions of the applicant.

Mandatory

The essential minimum documents required for a visa application, such as a passport or visa application form. These are necessary regardless of the location, method, or conditions of the application.

  • Passport

Issued less than 10 years ago, with a validity period exceeding the duration of stay by at least three months and with at least two blank pages.

  • Electronic Travel Authority application form

An online Electronic Travel Authority application form, duly completed and submitted with all the required documentation. When checking in for a flight or cruise, all travellers must present their New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) confirmation email.

  • Photograph

Must be recent (taken within the last 6 months) and presented as a clear, unaltered color image in JPG or JPEG format, sized 35x45 mm. It must not be AI-enhanced or digitally altered in any way. The subject’s face should occupy 70–80% of the frame against a plain or neutral background. Hair must not cover the face or ears, and headwear is permitted only for religious or medical purposes, provided the full face remains visible. Prescription glasses may be worn if they are non-tinted, have thin frames, do not obscure the face, and do not create glare or reflection.

  • Financial means for payment of applicable fees

As part of the NZeTA application process, applicants must pay two mandatory fees: the NZeTA request charge and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). The IVL is a mandatory charge for all visitors entering New Zealand, dedicated to funding tourism infrastructure and the protection of the country's natural environment. Payment for both is made in a single step during the online application.

  • New Zealand Traveller Declaration

All visitors must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) no earlier than 24 hours before arrival. This electronic form provides health, customs, and security information and must be presented upon arrival to facilitate border checks.

If accommodation has been prepaid for the entire visit, the required amount is reduced to NZD $400 per month.

  • Proof of accommodation

Confirmed hotel reservation, a rental agreement, or prepayment vouchers and receipts.

  • Return or onward ticket

All visitors must provide proof of fully paid onward travel out of New Zealand to a country they have the right to enter. The departure date must be within 3 months of arrival (6 months for UK passport holders). Travelers whose onward destination also requires proof of onward travel may be asked to present that ticket as well.
