Visa overview

Allows current or former residents to return after an absence or in cases of lost or damaged entry documents. Suitable for re-establishing residence. Requires proof of prior residence status and current eligibility. The entry visa does not give the right to stay in any country other than the Netherlands.

Time frames and cost

The primary characteristics that define the conditions for obtaining and using a visa. These conditions may vary depending on the individual circumstances of the applicant and the decision of the immigration authorities of the country.

  • from 3 months to 1 year

    Visa validity period

    The period during which the visa remains valid and can be used for entry into the country. The validity period or expiration date is indicated directly on the visa itself.

    <p>Entry visa is valid for up to 3 months, but the applicant must enter the Netherlands within a 7-day period after receiving a visa and apply for a new residence permit as soon as possible.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Entry visa is valid for more than 3 months if the applicant has applied for an extension of the residence permit for the purpose of studying, has not yet received a decision, but needs to go abroad for study for a longer period.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The Entry visa lasts up to 6 months if the applicant applies for renewal of a permanent residence document (the current one is no longer valid). If the person is Moluccan, the return visa may be issued for up to 12 months or more.</p>

    Duration of stay

    The maximum duration for which one is permitted to stay in the country continuously from the date of entry.

    <p>The stay period for a specific visa is determined by the consulate depending on the individual situation of the applicant and documentary evidence of the purpose of the visit.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The maximum permitted stay is up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Each day of stay is counted as part of all the previous 180 days starting from the current date. During this 180 day period, the total duration of stay must not exceed 90, regardless of the number of entries. For example, after entering the Schengen area and staying continuously for 90 day, the next entry can't be made earlier than 90 days later.</p> <p>It doesn't matter whether the visa free regime or a Schengen visa is used for entry - the rule applies to the person and not to specific visas or visa free regimes.</p>

    Extension of stay

    The extension of the maximum duration of stay in the country initially permitted by the visa, subject to approval by the immigration authorities. This is typically processed within the country without the need for departure.

    <p>Visa extension is not provided for this type of visa.</p>

  • single-entry

    The possibility of entering the country only once during the visa's validity period. After departure from the country with such a visa, re-entry is not possible, even if the visa's validity period has not yet expired.

    Number of entries

    A parameter specifying the number of times the visa holder can enter the country during its validity period. Visas can be single-entry, multiple-entry, or with a specified number of entries.

    <p>This type of visa is issued for a single entry return trip to the Netherlands. The return visa allows travel to other Schengen countries, but does not permit staying in another Schengen country for a holiday, for example.</p>

    Processing time

    The period during which the immigration authorities review the application and make a decision regarding the issuance of the visa. Only business days are counted, excluding weekends and public holidays.

    <p>Decisions on visa applications are made within 15 calendar days of the date of submission. This period may be extended up to 45 days during high workload times, for individual cases, especially when additional verification of the application is needed or consultations with authorities from other Schengen member states are required.</p>

    Consular fee

    A fee levied for the processing and evaluation of an application. This charge is non-refundable under any circumstances. In certain instances, the payment of supplementary fees may be required.

    <p>Fees may be waived or vary depending on the applicant's nationality, marital status, age, and specific purpose of the visit.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Visa fees are waived by all Schengen states for the following categories of people, regardless of their nationality:</p> <ul> <li>- Children under six years old;</li> <li>- School pupils, undergraduates, postgraduates, and accompanying teaching staff who undertake trips for study or training purposes;</li> <li>- Representatives of non-profit organizations aged 25 or younger participating in seminars, conferences, sporting, cultural, or educational events organized by non-profits;</li> <li>- Researchers as defined in Article 3(2) of EU Directive 2016/801 while traveling to carry out research activities or attend scientific seminars or conferences;</li> <li>- Persons wishing to ""replace"" an old valid visa with a full travel document (one with no blank pages) with a new visa valid for the same period on a new travel document;</li> <li>- Visa fees are waived for spouses, same-sex partners in civil unions, minor children, parents of minors and family members of EU/EEA citizens.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>As a rule, citizens of Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Ukraine pay EUR 35 for a Schengen visa regardless of where they reside or submit their application.</p> <p>The consular fee is the official charge for processing an application by an embassy or consulate and does not include additional payments, such as fees for visa centers, permits or other documents, or postal or courier delivery.</p>

Documents

A list of documents required for visa application. The exact list depends on the chosen visa type, the purpose of the visit, and the individual conditions of the applicant.

Mandatory

The essential minimum documents required for a visa application, such as a passport or visa application form. These are necessary regardless of the location, method, or conditions of the application.

  • Passport

    Issued less than 10 years ago, with a validity period exceeding the duration of the visa by at least three months and with at least two blank pages.

  • Photograph

    Must be recent (taken within the last 6 months), in color, clear, and sized 35x45mm. The face should occupy 70-80% of the image, printed on high-quality, matte paper with a plain, light background. Hair must not cover the eyes or eyebrows. Headwear is not permitted unless worn for religious or medical reasons, and the full face must remain visible.

  • Travel health insurance

    Valid for the entire Schengen area and the full duration of stay, covering at least €30,000, and include emergency medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation, including in case of death.

  • Visa application form

    An application for a Schengen visa to the Netherlands must be completed online only. The form must then be printed, signed, and submitted to the visa application center; applications without a unique code may be rejected.

  • Residence permit

    If the residence permit has expired: residence permit, a document showing the date aplicant left the Netherlands or the Schengen area (such as a plane ticket or a stamp in passport). If residence permit was lost or stolen: a police report, a photocopy of the residence permit, if exists, alien registration number (V number).

  • Current immigration or residence status

    National passport or ID card; residence permit or other document confirming the right to legally reside in the country of residence, if it differs from the one stated in the applicant's passport.

  • Receipt of fee payment

    Confirmation of the visa application processing fee.

*Foreign official documents must be apostilled and legalized in accordance with the regulations of the country whose consular or diplomatic mission they are being submitted to. Additionally, they must be accompanied by a certified translation into the official language of that country or into English, unless otherwise specified by the mission's requirements.

Requirements

  • Valid permanent resident status or proof thereof; all preliminary procedures for visa application have been completed.
