Internship visa — what you need to know
Internships are classified as employment under German law if they exceed 90 days within a year. Internship D-type visas are only available to students currently enrolled at a university in their home country.
The applicant must be enrolled at a recognized foreign university and have completed at least four semesters by the start of the internship
The internship must correspond to the field and level of study
The host party obtains prior approval from ZAV — a division of the Federal Employment Agency
Financial means: €992 per month in 2026. This is the available funds for living expenses, not a mandatory intern salary
During the stay under this visa, it is not permitted to take up other paid employment
Process: contract and program → ZAV approval → visa application → D visa → entry
Internship approval can be requested six months before it begins
Proof of living expenses can be provided not only by the internship pay, but also by a scholarship, personal funds, or a financial guarantor
Prior approval from the Federal Employment Agency (BA) is not required under the standard procedure
