to 1 year - official (service) passport
Visa validity period
The period during which the visa remains valid and can be used for entry into the country. The validity period or expiration date is indicated directly on the visa itself.

The visa itself is an authorization to enter and remain in the country within the period indicated therein.

The validity period depends directly on the visa category and the discretion of the Protocol Office. The maximum validity period is 2 years for holders of diplomatic passports and 1 year for holders of official (service) passports.

to 1 year - official (service) passport
Duration of stay
The maximum duration for which one is permitted to stay in the country continuously from the date of entry.

The period of stay is generally tied to the validity period of the visa itself and the purpose of the visit. The exact duration depends on the decision of the immigration officer and is indicated on the visa sticker or electronic visa.

After the new officer has arrived in Colombia, the corresponding embassy or mission is required to send a Verbal Note to the Protocol Office within 8 days of the date of arrival.

NB: Upon arrival in Colombia, the foreign national is required to register their visa with the migration authority (Migración Colombia) within 15 calendar days.

from 1 year to 2 years
Extension of stay
The extension of the maximum duration of stay in the country initially permitted by the visa, subject to approval by the immigration authorities. This is typically processed within the country without the need for departure.

The renewal is initiated not by the foreign national themselves, but by their embassy or mission in Colombia. This is done by sending an official request to the Protocol Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería). Missions are required to take all necessary measures to ensure timely renewal of the visa for the duration of the beneficiary's stay in Colombia.

This means that the process must be started well in advance, before the current visa expires.

Typically, the visa is renewed for a period corresponding to the original category: up to 2 years for diplomatic passports and up to 1 year for official (service) passports.

The period during which the immigration authorities review the application and make a decision regarding the issuance of the visa. Only business days are counted, excluding weekends and public holidays.

The official processing time for an application submitted to the Protocol Office is 8 business days from the date of its registration.

However, it is important to note that this applies specifically to "preferential" visas processed by the Protocol Office. If the application is submitted through standard consular channels (for example, through an embassy), the process may take longer.

Consular fee

This fee is collected after the holder's arrival in the country for the issuance of the foreigner's identity card (Cédula de Extranjería).
