High-skilled & researcher visa — what you need to know
Granted to certain categories of highly skilled professionals and researchers for limited-period work in Canada. These categories include short-term researchers working at public educational or research institutions for up to 120 consecutive days, as well as high-skilled workers in NOC skill levels 0 or A who may perform short-term assignments of up to 15 consecutive days every six months or up to 30 days per year.
Does not lead to permanent residency
Relocation with family and family reunification are not allowed
Confirmation of employment in Canada is required
For a researcher, the host must be a government-funded college or university authorised to award degrees, or an affiliated research institution
The work must be primarily research-based; the applicant must demonstrate a significant contribution to the project and the relevant qualifications
Upon expiry of the permitted period, work must be terminated
Procedure: job offer or contract → verification of category and previous exemptions → obtaining a TRV or eTA, if required → entry with supporting documents → verification of the exemption by a border officer → visitor record with a work authorisation note → obtaining a Social Insurance Number (SIN) → work within the permitted period
No work permit is required
It is possible to work for multiple employers during one authorised period, as long as each employment satisfies the conditions for exemption from the work permit requirement
The exemption from the requirement to obtain a work permit applies to researchers, including PhD holders, as well as students at bachelor's and subsequent levels of education
