Visa overview

Intended for foreign nationals travelling to Brazil to study, participate in student exchange program or research exchange. Regular courses or study exchanges must have a minimum course load of 15 hours per week. Post-doctoral researcher must apply for a VITEM I, as they are classified as researchers, not students. For studies or exchanges with duration of less than 90 days, the applicant must request a Visitor Visa (VIVIS). Student visa holders are permitted to undertake paid work, as long as the working hours are compatible with their course load.

  • 1 year

    Visa validity period

    The period during which the visa remains valid and can be used for entry into the country. The validity period or expiration date is indicated directly on the visa itself.

    <p><span data-sheets-root="1">Validity period is up to 1 year counted from the date of issue of the visa. The validity period of the temporary visa does not coincide with the period of the residence permit.</span></p>

    Duration of stay

    The maximum duration for which one is permitted to stay in the country continuously from the date of entry.

    <p><span data-sheets-root="1">Within 90 days of arrival in Brazil, bearers of visas must register with the Brazilian Immigration authorities (Pol&iacute;cia Federal &ndash; DPMAF) in the place where the applicant intends to take up residence. Residence authorization (once in Brazil only) is given by the Federal Police Department (DPMAF), accordingly to the purpose of the stay.</span></p>

    Extension of stay

    The extension of the maximum duration of stay in the country initially permitted by the visa, subject to approval by the immigration authorities. This is typically processed within the country without the need for departure.

    Number of entries

    Processing time

    <p><span data-sheets-root="1">Processing takes up to 5 working days. Some visas may require additional procedures and consultations, which will, therefore, increase the processing time. It is recommended to apply for a visa 3 moths before the intended trip.</span></p>

    Consular fee

    A fee levied for the processing and evaluation of an application. This charge is non-refundable under any circumstances. In certain instances, the payment of supplementary fees may be required.

    <p>Consular fee is the official charge for processing a visa application by an embassy or consulate of the country and does not include any additional payments that may be required depending on the place and method of submission, such as visa center fees, the cost of permits or other documents, postal or courier delivery, and others.</p>

Documents

A list of documents required for visa application. The exact list depends on the chosen visa type, the purpose of the visit, and the individual conditions of the applicant.

Mandatory

The essential minimum documents required for a visa application, such as a passport or visa application form. These are necessary regardless of the location, method, or conditions of the application.

  • Passport

    A valid passport with a validity period exceeding 6 months and with at least two blank pages.

  • Photograph

    Must be recent (taken within the last 6 months), in color, clear, and sized 35x45mm. The face should occupy 70-80% of the image, printed on high-quality, matte paper with a plain, light background. Hair must not cover the eyes or eyebrows. Headwear is not permitted unless worn for religious or medical reasons, and the full face must remain visible.

  • Visa application form

    Fully filled online, printed and signed visa application form.

  • Full Birth certificate

    The name of the parents must be indicated. Birth certificates from outside the Consulate's jurisdiction (includes those issued in other countries) must be apostilled.

  • Police сlearance

    Valid, apostilled original police record from a home country. Applicants who have lived in other/multiple countries within the last 12 months must provide a police record from each of those countries. They must also be duly apostilled or legalized by the respective Brazilian consular authority with jurisdiction over these countries, and translated by a sworn translator, if necessary.

Supporting

Documents that specify, substantiate, and confirm the purpose of the visit, as well as provide necessary information about the applicant and their future activities in the country.

  • Proof of financial means

    At least one of the following documents must be submitted: - Bank statements containing the account holder's name, current balance and transactions from the last 3 months (leading to the week that precedes the interview at the Embassy); and/or - International credit card statements containing the card holder's name, available credit limit and transactions from the last 3 months (leading to the week that precedes the interview at the Embassy); and/or - The last 3 payslips. *As a reference, the applicant must have approximately US$150 per day available to cover expenses.

  • Enrollment proof

    Original letter from the home university. Applies only to higher education students. The document must attest the student is currently enrolled in higher education and will maintain the link with the university during the period of study in Brazil.

  • Letter from the Brazilian education institution

    Letter from the Brazilian educational institution confirming the applicant’s enrolment or admission. The letter must be issued on official letterhead and include the course name, duration, dates, weekly workload (minimum 15 hours for regular courses and exchanges), payment or scholarship details, and contact information of the admission officer. For regular courses, the institution’s CNPJ must also be included. Please note: the signature must be notarised by a Brazilian notary ("tabelião"), unless the course is offered by a public university.

Documents required vary depending on individual circumstances, specific visa conditions, the place, and the method of application.

  • Current immigration or residence status

    National passport or ID card; residence permit or other document confirming the right to legally reside in the country of residence, if it differs from the one stated in the applicant's passport.

*Foreign official documents must be apostilled and legalized in accordance with the regulations of the country whose consular or diplomatic mission they are being submitted to. Additionally, they must be accompanied by a certified translation into the official language of that country or into English, unless otherwise specified by the mission's requirements.
