Doctoral studies Sweden

Long-term visa, Sweden national visa for residence

Visa overview

Description of the visa, its purpose, conditions, peculiarities of issuance, and guidelines for utilization.

Issued to applicants who have been admitted to full-time doctoral studies in Sweden. The applicant must be able to support themselves and any accompanying family members financially. The applicant can work with teaching, research or administration (up to 20% of full-time). An industrial doctoral student can work more than 20% of full-time under certain conditions.

Time frames and cost

The primary characteristics that define the conditions for obtaining and using a visa. These conditions may vary depending on the individual circumstances of the applicant and the decision of the immigration authorities of the country.

  • from 1 year to 4 years

    Validity period

The period during which the visa remains valid and can be used for entry into the country. The validity period or expiration date is indicated directly on the visa itself.

The temporary residence permit allows entry and stay in Sweden for more than 1 year. The Swedish Migration Agency decides the length of stay based on evidence provided. Citizens of countries that require an entry visa must collect a temporary residence permit card at the embassy and travel with it and a passport; visa-free nationals can enter with a passport and decision copy, but obliged to visit the Swedish Migration Agency upon arrival.

  • 4 years

    Length of stay

The maximum duration for which one is permitted to stay in the country continuously from the date of entry.

Is granted for a maximum of 4 years, but not for longer than the studies are supposed to last. If the applicant is granted a residence permit for more than 1 year, they should register in Sweden’s population register and get a Swedish personal identity number.

  • 4 years

    Extension of stay

The extension of the maximum duration of stay in the country initially permitted by the visa, subject to approval by the immigration authorities. This is typically processed within the country without the need for departure.

Extension of a student residence permit in Sweden is possible for as long as the studies continue. The duration of the extension is determined by the Swedish Migration Agency upon application, based on the remaining period of the study programme.

  • multiple-entry

The ability to enter and exit the country an unlimited number of times, unless otherwise specified, within the visa's validity period.

    Number of entries

A parameter specifying the number of times the visa holder can enter the country during its validity period. Visas can be single-entry, multiple-entry, or with a specified number of entries.

  • 4 months

    Processing time

The period during which the immigration authorities review the application and make a decision regarding the issuance of the visa. Only business days are counted, excluding weekends and public holidays.

The waiting time is approximate and is based on the time frame for reviewing similar applications over the past 12 months. The length of the review is affected by both the workload of the migration service and the need for additional verification of documents or an incomplete package of documents provided by the applicant.

  • €140 - for adults

    Consular fee

A fee levied for the processing and evaluation of an application. This charge is non-refundable under any circumstances. In certain instances, the payment of supplementary fees may be required.

The following people pay no fee to apply for study residence permit: -students at the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö; -Japanese citizens; -students who have received a scholarship for studies in Sweden from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the EU, the Swedish Institute, or Uppsala University’s International Science Programme. The scholarship must be intended to be used for living expenses and not just cover tuition fees. The scholarship must be paid out during the period for which the applicant is applying for a residence permit. The exception does not apply if the applicant receives a salary, for example if they are employed as a doctoral student. The consular fee is the official charge for processing a visa and a residence permit application at the embassy, consulate or immigration office in Sweden and does not include additional charges that may be incurred depending on where and how the application is submitted, such as fees at visa centers, costs of permits or documents, postage or courier services, etc.
