Photograph

Hair must not cover the eyes or eyebrows. Headwear is not permitted unless worn for religious or medical reasons, and the full face must remain visible. Applicants must submit 2 photographs.

Passport copies
Applicants are required to submit a copy of the passport page bearing their personal data and photograph, copies of any previous South African visas appearing in the passport, and, if applicable, a copy of a second passport.

Invitation letter
A detailed statement from the applicant's spouse or parent, who is legally residing in the Republic of South Africa. The letter must include the host's physical address and contact details, confirm the relationship, and declare full responsibility for the applicant during their stay in South Africa. This includes covering accommodation, living expenses, and any costs related to the applicant's maintenance and, if necessary, removal or deportation from the country. The statement must be accompanied by proof of the host's address (utility bill, lease agreement, or tax invoice) matching the address provided in the letter. The letter must be dated no earlier than 1 month prior to the date of application.
Proof of the relative's status in South Africa
Applicants must present documentary evidence of the relative's South African citizenship or permanent residence status (a valid identity document, passport, or birth certificate).
Proof of family ties
Applicants must submit proof of kinship within the second step with a South African citizen or permanent resident. This includes an attested marriage or birth certificate, translated into English by a sworn translator if applicable, and where relevant, a court order for sole parental responsibilities or guardianship, divorce decree, death certificate of a deceased parent, or paternity test results. For unmarried partners, a notarial agreement signed by both parties is required, confirming that the relationship has existed for at least two years to the exclusion of all others. Additional documents include proof of dissolution of any previous marriage (divorce decree or death certificate), evidence of financial support and shared responsibilities, and, if the relationship was concluded between two foreigners abroad, official recognition of the relationship from the relevant authorities.

Yellow fever vaccination certificate
A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for individuals traveling from or transiting through yellow fever endemic regions of Africa or South America. The vaccination should be administered at least 10 days prior to entry. This requirement does not apply to persons who remain in direct transit through such areas without stopover.
Travel health insurance
Valid for the full duration of stay in South Africa, covering at least $100,000 and include emergency medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation, including in case of death.
Air ticket
The applicant must provide evidence of flight arrangements, which may be a provisional or confirmed air ticket (one-way tickets are accepted).
Police clearance certificate
A police clearance certificate must be issued by the police or competent authority in any country where the applicant resided for 12 months or longer during the five years immediately preceding the application, after having attained the age of 18. The certificate must not be older than 6 months at the time of submission.
Proof of financial mean
Applicants must submit an original bank statement for the last 3 months, duly stamped and certified by the issuing bank, and dated no earlier than 7 days prior to the date of submission. The statement must show evidence of available funds amounting to no less than ZAR 8,500 per month for each person to cover living expenses. This requirement does not apply to a spouse or dependent minor child of a South African citizen or permanent resident.
Medical report
Applicants must submit a medical report issued by a registered medical practitioner, confirming their general state of health and detailing any medical conditions they may have. The document must not be older than 6 months at the time of submission. Pregnant women and children under the age of 12 do not need to submit this document.
